When I first heard about Blue Apron I was skeptical. I wondered about the quality of the ingredients and the delivery. Would people who don’t usually cook be interested in taking on another task after a long work day? What if the portions were too small? I didn’t think it would take off nearly as quickly as it has. After trying out one of Blue Apron’s dinners, I’m happy all my doubts were proven wrong.
I’m sure everyone has heard of Blue Apron. The concept of delivering customers fresh, portioned ingredients for a recipe they picked for themselves seemed life changing when the website first surfaced. For people that love to cook but aren’t confident in buying ingredients, or cooking them for that matter, Blue Apron is a godsend.
Each week, customers can go online and pick two to four meals based on their plan which is determined by the number of people eating. When the box shows up on your door step, the only things you have to supply are pan, a cutting board and a knife. My friend is a loyal subscriber of Blue Apron since he is a nervous chef. For him, the convenience of not having to go food shopping and getting step by step instruction make dinner more enjoyable. After work, he has minimal prep work tin order to cook his meal.
He chose to make the Pork Chops and Spicy “Chow Chow” meal. The recipe card shows pork chops are served over a bed of sweet potato salad with a mixed vegetable slaw on top. We rolled up our sleeves and got to work.
Since every ingredient is measured, all the cook has to do is chop the vegetables according to the directions, making each meal a breeze. Since most seasonings and sauces are included, you’ll save cabinet space (and a few dollars) by not having to buy a whole container. Customers can try a new without having to buy a large quantity.
I thought the recipe was clear and very easy to follow. Ingredients were highlighted within the recipe to emphasize when each one should be added to the dish. Start to finish, it took 35 minutes to prep and cook the meal to make a restaurant sized portion. If you're looking for the perfect pairing, Blue Apron even recommends a wine to compliment each meal.
The best part of Blue Apron is the price. The family plan, for four people includes two to four meals per week at $8.75 per person, making this a perfect under $12 option. Blue Apron even offers $40 off your first order, the perfect deal to get you to put your apron on
